Thanks. I hope it was just as good on the second reading. Although it has been several years since the events at my old church, these memories continue to be painful for me. So many of the Reddit comments have been so supportive, which has made me feel a lot better. I am very grateful for everyone’s kind words. I adored my youth director until he decided I wasn’t spending enough time at my local church and I was apparently focusing too much time on denominational youth stuff.

I mentioned he was emotionally manipulative. He started saying things like ‘I can’t believe you wouldn’t spend more time at our church if you truly loved me and loved Jesus’, etc. I mentioned it to my mom one day in passing, boy oh boy did that blow up. That went back to the personnel committee. Long story short, dude gets fired, wife gets fired, Angry Runs Good Morning Football Shirt and they’re not welcome at any denominational church. Come to find out he’d been going right up to the line of committing fraud by manipulating financial reports and his wife had been on several rounds of performance improvement plans for not getting her shit done.

Looking back at it, it was so obvious what was happening. But being involved with it at the time made it not nearly as clear. I haven’t been back to that church in years but it still pains me when I think about the church. Just coming into this now, but my friend, you are doing the Lord’s work. I wish more people were strong enough to take on bullies like this— especially bullies who are willing to fleece vulnerable people.
